An Unattended (Direct) Cremation is a dignified and respectful cremation without a service at the crematorium. It gives you the option to arrange a unique and personal goodbye at a later date with the ashes present at a location that is personal to you and your loved one.
An Unattended (Direct) Cremation arranged by Hillier Funeral Service is different to one you might see advertised on TV or online by a national provider.
We offer a unique quiet and simple send off, but you still get all the care support from our experienced team here in Swindon, rather than making the arrangements via a national call centre.
Here’s how we do things:
- Your loved one will be brought into care at our Rodbourne Cheney funeral home. Other providers will take the deceased to a national mortuary, possibly hundreds of miles away.
- We will treat your loved ones in exactly the same way we would if they were having a traditional funeral.
- We will dress your loved one in their own clothes as per your wishes.
- You can visit your loved one before the cremation in one of our Chapels of Rest if you wish. There is a small additional charge for this service, but it is a service a national provider will not offer.
- On the day of the funeral, your loved one will be placed into a coffin and transported to the crematorium in our traditional hearse, not a private ambulance.
- Our team of pallbearers will shoulder carry the coffin into the chapel and will lay it on the catafalque.
- You have the option to choose a piece of music that is played during this time.
- Our team will take a moment with the coffin and bow our heads in respect.
- After the cremation, you can choose to have the ashes scattered in the Garden of Remembrance at the crematorium, or will collect your loved one’s ashes on your behalf.
- We can help you to choose a suitable urn or help you with other ways to keep the ashes, such as memorial jewellery.

*Our cardboard coffin comes in sizes up to 6ft 2 tall and 24 inches wide if you loved one requires a larger coffin then we need to charge an extra £100 to have this specially made.
